The use of cementitious binder with expansive or pozzolanic properties allows partial or complete self-sealing of cracks in cementitious composites. Modification of the composition of the cementitious binder leads to increased effectiveness of self-healing mechanisms in concrete. The aim of the study was to evaluate the effect of adding metahalloysite and calcium sulfoaluminate cement to Portland cement on the self-healing of cracks in cement mortars maturing in a calcium hydroxide solution. The results of the research showed that the use of 10 – 20% metahalloysite and 30% CSA cement in the binder has the greatest effect in reducing the volume of cracks in cementitious composites maturing in calcium hydroxide solution.

Zastosowanie spoiwa cementowego o właściwościach pucolanowych lub ekspansywnych umożliwia częściowe lub całkowite samozamykanie rys w kompozytach cementowych. Modyfikacja składu spoiwa cementowego prowadzi do zwiększenia efektywności mechanizmów samonaprawczych w betonie.

The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of nanomagnetite admixture on the mechanical and shielding properties of cement mortar under high temperature conditions. In the event of nuclear facility failures (e.g., related to cooling water leakage), temperatures above 300°C are observed. Because cement paste loses its properties at temperatures of 600-800°C, testing was conducted only up to 800°C. This paper presents the results of tests on cement mortars whose composition was modified with the addition of 5% (by weight of cement) of commercial magnetite nanostructures. Cubic concrete samples with sides of 50 mm were subjected to oven heating at temperature of 300°C, 450°C, 600°C and 800°C. The heating and cooling rate was 1°C/min, and the maximum heating temperature was maintained for 1 hour. After the cooling process was completed, the samples were irradiated with gamma rays emitted by a cesium isotope for 1 hour. The linear gamma radiation attenuation coefficient μ was determined. Comparative tests were also conducted for the reference mortar without the nanomodifier. Samples with nanomagnetite showed a slight improvement in the attenuation coefficient and a significant improvement in compressive strength over the tested temperature range.

W artykule przedstawiono wyniki badań zaprawy cementowej, której skład zmodyfikowano dodatkiem nanocząstek Fe3O4 w ilości 5% w stosunku do masy cementu. Próbki betonowe w kształcie sześcianów o boku 50 mm poddawano wygrzewaniu w piecu w temperaturze: 300; 450; 600 i 800°C.

This study presents preliminary results concerning the potential effects of fires involving battery‑powered electric vehicles on concrete. In particular, the microstructural properties of standard mortar exposed to contact combustion of Li-ion cells were assessed. Microstructural analyses were performed on a control sample not subjected to thermal exposure, as well as on samples exposed to one, two, and three cycles of Li-ion battery contact combustion. A significant effect of battery combustion on the degradation of cement mortar microstructure was observed. This was manifested primarily by the development of a microcrack network and the penetration of elements originating from the battery – carbon and metallic inclusions of Ni, Co, and Mn, which are initially components of the electrodes – into the mortar microstructure. The presented study is intended to serve as an incentive for further research in this area.

The aim of the present study was to assess the feasibility of using fine-grained waste glass combined with metakaolin in cement mortars containing reactive dolomitic aggregate. The research encompassed an analysis of the activity of the glass and metakaolin additives, as well as cement pastes incorporating these additives in amounts of 10%, 20%, and 30%, alongside investigations into alkali corrosion and the microstructure of the mortars. The results indicate that partially replacing cement with waste glass increases alkali activity and the risk of corrosion, whereas introducing a combined additive (glass + metakaolin) significantly reduces the content of active alkali, limits mortar expansion. The data obtained confirm that metakaolin exerts a stabilizing effect by counteracting the adverse consequences of the high alkalinity of glass, thereby improving the durability and chemical stability of cementitious products. stated, employing this combined additive may provide a valuable solution in the production of cement-based materials.

W artykule zaprezentowano możliwości zastosowania drobno mielonego szkła odpadowego i metakaolinu w zaprawach cementowych zawierających reaktywne kruszywo dolomitowe. Badania obejmowały analizę aktywności dodatków (szkła i metakaolinu) oraz zaczynów cementowych z udziałem tych dodatków w ilości 10, 20 i 30%. Ponadto zbadano korozję alkaliczną oraz mikrostrukturę zapraw. Wyniki wskazują, że zastąpienie części cementu szkłem odpadowym powoduje zwiększenie aktywności alkalicznej i ryzyka korozji, natomiast wprowadzenie kompleksowego dodatku (szkło + metakaolin) redukuje znacznie zawartość aktywnych alkaliów i ogranicza ekspansję zapraw.

This research focuses on enhancing the fire resistance of cement mortars by incorporating ethylene-vinyl acetate (EVA) polymer. It aims to assess how EVA improves the mortar’s performance when exposed to high temperatures and fire. The expected benefits include increased durability and enhanced safety under fire conditions through polymer modification. To investigate this, calcium sulfoaluminate cement mortars with varying EVA contents were subjected to direct fire exposure up to 700°C, following a detailed experimental plan to analyze their thermomechanical behavior after testing. The findings reveal that some samples experienced explosive reactions upon exposure to fire. Notably, the incorporation of EVA significantly enhanced both compressive and flexural strengths after direct fire exposure, with mortars containing 2 and 3% EVA achieving impressive compressive strengths of 11.55 and 13.82 MPa, respectively; the flexural strength peaked at approximately 4.5 MPa with 3% EVA. Thermal analyses indicated pronounced improvements in insulation properties for EVA concentrations between 1 and 3%, evidenced by reduced thermal conductivity and increased specific heat, highlighting the energy efficiency of these modified mortars, a vital consideration for sustainable construction. Additionally, mercury intrusion porosimetry testing showed that the optimal porosity of 29.92% was achieved with 1% EVA, while further increases to 2 and 3% led to diminishing returns. Thus, determining the optimal percentage of EVA is essential, as EVA modifications present a promising and sustainable alternative to conventional practices in cement mortars.

The paper presents the results of the verification of a neural method for evaluating the pull-off adhesion of a cement composite modified with granite powder, previously developed by the author. This method may be useful for assessing this parameter in large-area concrete floors, where testing using the pull-off method is burdensome due to the high number of test locations, the time required to perform them, and the need to repair the tested areas. For the experimental verification of the artificial neural network, results were used from tests of the pull-off adhesion of newly made samples examined after 7 and 28 days of curing, while the neural network was trained and tested using results obtained after 56 and 90 days of curing of cement composites with the same material composition. The verification yielded satisfactory results.

Due to the problem of dwindling natural resources and increasing waste volumes, the use of various waste materials as a substitute in cement-based products is gaining particular importance. This study compared the effect of two types of waste glass - transparent and blue - in two fractions (<0.063 mm and 2 mm - 0.063 mm), used as a partial sand substitute, on the physical and mechanical properties of cement mortars. Thirteen sample series were prepared, including a control sample (CS) and samples with glass added at 10 %, 20 %, and 30 % by weight of cement as a substitute for aggregate (standard sand). The tests were conducted in accordance with applicable PN-EN standards, assessing workability (flow table method), flexural and compressive strength after 7 and 28 days, water absorption, and frost resistance. The study showed that glass additives reduced the workability of mortars, particularly in the case of fine fractions, although some of the mixtures improved mechanical properties. After 28 days, the highest compressive strength was achieved for mortars with 10 % - 20 % blue glass (over 62 MPa), exceeding the reference sample. Flexural strength was also highest for samples with 10 % blue glass (<0.063 mm). The results suggest that appropriately selected glass type and amount can positively influence the performance of cement mortars, supporting the concept of sustainable construction.

Content available remote Moisture and size dependence of thermal deformation in cement and asphalt mortar
EN
Cement and asphalt (CA) mortar is a key structural material for high-speed railway slab ballastless tracks. To investigate the deformation property of CA mortar in the range of − 20–60 °C, a DIL402C thermal expansion instrument and a self-designed thermal deformation tester were used in this paper, and the thermal deformation mechanism was revealed by combining the dynamic thermal analysis technology, the relationship between the deformation and mass under cyclic temperature variation, and the microstructural testing. The results indicated that the thermal expansion deformation of CA mortar decreased as the moisture content increased. Under vacuum-drying, air-drying, and water saturation state, the thermal expansion strain ranges of CA mortar specimens with different sizes were 1.0248–1.4340 × 10–3, 0.4438–1.3669 × 10–3, and − 2.1815–0.5571 × 10–3, respectively. The smaller the specimen size, the more significant the thermal shrinkage deformation caused by the increased humidity. The thermal expansion coefficient of CA mortar increased gradually during the initial heating process and then changed in a complicated manner with changes in the humidity. As a porous material with asphalt as the continuous phase, when the temperature increases, the volume expansion of ice, the melting of ice into water, the migration and evaporation of water, the phase change of asphalt, and the volume expansion of cement mortar jointly affect the overall deformation property of CA mortar.

This research experimentally analyses the fabrication, testing, and development of cement mortar incorporating Polyvinyl Alcohol (PVA) fiber at concentrations of 1%, 2%, and 3% by volume of the total cementitious matrix. PVA fiber geometry with a length of 8 mm and a diameter of 40 µm, specifically the RECS 15/8 mm type, was utilized due to its optimal balance between mechanical performance and workability. Mechanical tests, including three-point bending, were conducted to assess the load–deflection behavior, ultimate strength, and energy absorption capacity of the reinforced beams. The scope of this study encompasses tensile strength, elastic modulus in four-point bending with un-notched specimens, fracture energy in three-point bending with notched specimens, and compressive strength tests. The addition percentages of PVA fibers (1%, 2%, and 3%) were selected to investigate the effect of fiber concentration on mechanical properties systematically and to identify the optimal reinforcement level for enhancing performance. Tensile strength values exhibited a clear enhancement with increasing PVA fiber content, recording 1.96 MPa, 3.17 MPa, and 5.12 MPa for 1%, 2%, and 3% PVA fiber, respectively. The Elastic Modulus, determined through four-point bending with un-notched specimens, demonstrated a notable increase in stiffness, with values of 26.17 GPa, 53.63 GPa, and 67.7 GPa for 1%, 2%, and 3% PVA fiber, respectively. Three-point bending tests with notched specimens revealed improved energy absorption capabilities, as indicated by Fractured Energy values of 1.33 N.mm/mm2, 2.98 N.mm/mm2, and 3.91 N.mm/mm2 for 1%, 2%, and 3% PVA fiber. Furthermore, compressive tests yielded increased strengths, with values of 46.8 MPa, 57.2 MPa, and 73.9 MPa for 1%, 2%, and 3% PVA fiber, respectively. The goal of this research is to explore and quantify the benefits of adding PVA Fibers to cement mortars, focusing on enhancing mechanical properties such as tensile strength, elastic modulus, fracture energy, and compressive strength. The findings are particularly beneficial for developing auxetic cementitious materials, offering applications in advanced structural components, earthquake-resistant structures, protective barriers, flexible pavements and runways, and innovative architectural designs. The results highlight the potential of PVA fibers to significantly enhance the performance and durability of construction materials, paving the way for advanced and resilient building components.

This study investigates the enhancement of fly ash-cement mortar performance through tetraethyl orthosilicate (TEOS) modification, focusing on both strength development and durability parameters. A comprehensive experimental program, including compressive strength tests, water absorption measurements, sorptivity assessments, and ultrasonic pulse velocity (UPV) evaluations, was conducted. The results demonstrated that partial replacement of cement with 30% fly ash not only improved 28-day compressive strength to 46.81 MPa but also significantly refined the microstructure, as evidenced by reduced water absorption and higher UPV values. The incorporation of TEOS at 0.5%, 1%, and 1.5% further enhanced permeability without compromising strength, with the 1% TEOS mixture (S10) achieving optimal performance. This mixture exhibited the lowest water absorption (2.77%) and reduced sorptivity, attributed to the sol-gel formation of silica networks that densify the pore structure and impede water ingress. UPV results confirmed the structural integrity of TEOS-modified mortars, with velocities comparable to the highest-performing fly ash blend. FESEM analysis shows that incorporating fly ash and TEOS refines the cement mortar microstructure. This results in enhanced matrix densification and improved morphology. These findings underscore the efficacy of TEOS as a chemical modifier for producing durable, high-performance fly ash-cement composites, suitable for sustainable construction applications.

This paper presents the results of a study on the effect of fully biodegradable modified starch in the form of LU-1400-2 dextrin (denoted d2) and two commercial plasticizers P1 and P2 on selected properties of cement mortars. The studied cement mortar was enriched with 0.25%, 0.30%, 0.35%, and 0.40% d2 dextrin, relative to the weight of the cement. The tests carried out indicatethat the addition of dextrin to cement mortars results in an increase in strength (a 9% increase was observed with 0.25% dextrin) and liquefaction of the mixtures. However, commercial plasticizers were found to decrease compressive strength. Starch derivatives are a type of natural plasticizer that is more environmentally sustainable than other types. They are produced from renewable sources, such as plants, and their production generates less waste and involves low greenhouse gas emissions. They are produced from renewable sources, such as plants, and their production generates less waste and involves low greenhouse gas emissions. Preliminary studies suggest that dextrins have great potential as natural plasticizers. The increasing popularity of natural plasticizers in the chemical and construction industries is due to a growing interest in sustainability and concern about the harmful effects of traditional chemical plasticizers.

This paper presents the results of research aimed for evaluating the impact of applicability of spent fluid catalytic cracking catalyst as a substitute of 20, 40, 60 and 80% of cement, by mass, in cement mortars on their selected mechanical and physical performances. It was demonstrated that substitution of 20% of cement mass with spent catalyst enhanced mortar’s compressive strength for 16.7%. Further addition of spent catalyst tended to decrease strength, whilst, simultaneously, rose the values of capillary absorption and water absorptivity because of deterioration of cement matrix structure, documented by SEM photos. Based on the research and literature data, it was proved that spent cracking catalyst might be a promising additive to cement in the amount not exceeding 40% of its mass considering its pozzolanicity.

The paper presents the results of water and cyclical freeze – thaw resistance tests of cementitious mortars based on 3 different binders: Portland cement, calcium sulfoaluminate cement and belite-ye’elimite-ferrite cement, modified with organic additives: methylcellulose and redispersible polymer powder based on vinyl acetate-ethylene copolymer. The tests of mechanical strength were conducted in 2 modes: compressive strength of prisms and pull off strength of samples applied as a thin layer on the concrete substrate. The mechanical tests were complemented with phase composition analysis by the means of X-ray diffractometry. The evidently negative effect of organic admixtures on the water resistance of all mortars was found, whereas the scale of strength decrease depends on the cement type used. It was also shown that adverse impact of organic additives on water and frost resistance is more pronounced in case of pull off strength measurements than in case of compressive strength of prisms. The mechanical results could not be explained on the grounds of mineral matrix compositions traced by XRD method. In the further parts of the paper possible alternative explanations of the described observations were discussed.

This study focuses on improving the mechanical properties and microstructure of cement-based materials, which are crucial for the durability and safety of construction projects. Conventional cement, although commonly used, has certain limitations in terms of its mechanical strength and durability. Therefore, there is a requirement for innovative methods to enhance these properties. This study investigates the potential of nano-TiO2 (titanium dioxide) as an additive to overcome these limitations. The objective of this research is to perform a thorough experimental analysis to examine how different concentrations of nano-TiO2 impact the mechanical performance and microstructural changes in cement paste and mortar. The study examines the influence of nano-TiO2 on the compressive and flexural strengths of cementitious materials. It also explores how nano-TiO2 modifies the microstructure to enhance compactness and resilience. The results suggest that incorporating nano-TiO2 into cement leads to a substantial improvement in both compressive and flexural strengths. This enhancement is particularly notable when the nano-TiO2 concentration is at an optimal level of 1.0% by weight. The SEM and XRD analyses demonstrate that this concentration enhances the microstructure by decreasing voids and facilitating the development of C-S-H crystals. However, excessive concentration may have negative consequences, such as the creation of extra empty spaces.
