Evaluating the effectiveness of foam mortar as a lightweight fill for reducing foundation settlement on soft soils: a case study of an Indonesian toll road. The construction of toll roads on soft soil in Indonesia is associated with significant geotechnical challenges, primarily excessive and long-lasting settlement. Therefore, this study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of foam mortar as a lightweight fill to mitigate issues across three distinct toll road projects: Probolinggo–Banyuwangi, Kediri–Kertosono, and Semarang–Demak. The method used was comprehensive numerical analysis, focusing on assessing the magnitude and rate of subsoil compression and slope stability under different scenarios of varying embankment heights, soft soil depths, and soil improvement strategies, including prefabricated vertical drains and replacement. The results consistently showed that incorporating foam mortar significantly reduced settlement. An increase in foam mortar percentage in the embankment also led to a substantial decrease in compression magnitude. Optimal performance was observed with a mix of 75% foam mortar and 25% soil for high embankments. Furthermore, this study provided customized, efficient design solutions for each site. The trend indicates that foam mortar is a viable, cost-effective alternative to conventional methods. This is because the application enhances slope stability and ensures compliance with stringent settlement-rate criteria, offering a practical solution for infrastructure development on compressible soils.

The paper presents results of the research on the influence of selected technological parameters on dynamic replacement columns formation. The analysis concerned: the depth of the initial crater Hcr, the volume of its filling Vcr, and the grain size of the backf used. It was carried out on a testing stand that allowed the observation and documentation of the particle driving process. The soft soil layer was simulated with a hydrogel, while the bearing layer was made of medium sand. The columns were formed in the initial craters, with a depth of 0.4, 0.6 or 0.8 of the thickness of the soft layer, and backfilled up to 50, 75 or 100% of the volume. The investigation of the optimal crater and backfill volume was carried out using medium gravel (2-16 mm). The influence of the grain size of the backfill material was studied at the optimal Hce and Vcr – medium sand (0.063-2 mm) and medium gravel (2-32 mm) were used at this stage. The displacements of backfill material grains and the shapes of the columns were analysed using GOM and Cad software. The optimal solution was to construct the columns in the shallow crater (Hcr/Hs = 0.4) and to backfill it with gravel 2-16 mm up to 50% of the volume – under these conditions, end-bearing columns were formed with the diameter increasing with depth. In order to improve the shape of the column, in the final phase of the DR process, Vcr shall be increased up to 100%.

Skłoniło to autorów artykułu do podjęcia badań o wspomnianym zakresie – w pierwszym etapie w warunkach laboratoryjnych. Proces formowania kolumn był rejestrowany aparatem cyfrowym i kamerą o częstotliwości nagrywania 100 kl/s, a następnie analizowany w programie GOM i Autocad. Przewidziano wykonanie trzech typów kolumn, różniących się głębokością krateru początkowego: (A) Hcr = 0.2 m (Hcr/Hs = 0,4), (B) Hcr = 0,3 m (Hcr/Hs = 0, 6) and (C) Hcr = 0, 4 m (Hcr/Hs = 0, 8).

Przedstawiono rezultaty analizy wstecznej konstrukcji poddanych badaniom w skali rzeczywistej, które mogą posłużyć do wstępnej analizy rozwiązań w programach modelowania numerycznego.

Geosynthetics have been used for decades in infrastructure construction, especially in traffic construction and geotechnics. Despite this, there is still a relatively low uptake of methods for designing solutions using these materials. While the applications of geogrids (or more broadly: geosynthetics) in reinforced soil structures (retaining walls, steep slopes) and the associated design methods are well described in the literature and standards, there is much more modest knowledge available on applications related to the reinforcement of the subsoil directly under road and railway pavement structures, the construction of working platforms on soils with very low bearing capacity, or increasing the fatigue life of the pavement itself. This situation is due, among other things, to the fact that different geosynthetics, including different geogrids, affect the bearing capacity of the subsoil and the durability of the structure in different and often very different ways. Hence – unlike, for example, in the case of retaining walls – it is difficult to develop a one-size-fits-all design method covering this range of applications. It is necessary to rely on the experience of manufacturers of particular varieties of geogrids or geo-grids and to use design methods developed by them based on this experience. This article presents the technology of geocellular mattresses used primarily in the base of embankments on weak and deformable grounds, as well as for the construction of temporary working platforms. The performance of structures in complex and complicated geotechnical conditions is analysed on the example of completed projects. The results of back analysis of structures subjected to real-scale tests are presented, which can be used for preliminary analysis of solutions in numerical modelling programmes.

The mechanical properties of soil in soft soil area are poor, and the settlement of the underlying layer in the composite foundation accounts for a large proportion of the total settlement. At present, most of the research focuses on the settlement of the reinforced area, and the research on the settlement of the underlying layer is of great significance for the settlement of soft soil composite foundation. The differences in load transfer modes of soil and pile are analyzed, and based on the Boussinesq solution and Mindlin solution, a calculation method for the stress and settlement of the underlying layer in flexible and rigid pile composite foundation is proposed. The relative displacement of soil and pile in flexible pile composite foundation is small, and the negative friction can be ignored, but the influence of effective pile length should be considered. The relative displacement of soil and pile in rigid pile composite foundation is large, so the negative friction should be considered. Part of soil top stress is transmitted to the pile via negative friction, and then the pile axial force is transmitted back to the soil via positive friction. In addition to effective pile length, the change of stress transfer path caused by negative friction should also be considered in settlement calculation.

Excessive settlement or differential settlement of subgrade will lead to the deterioration of line operational conditions, the reduction of passenger comfort, and even endanger the safety of traffic. Therefore, it is of great significance to study the settlement prediction of subgrade. In order to predict the settlement of foundation under the next level of loading earlier during the embankment construction process, a new method of predicting settlement of soft soil subgrade is proposed. Firstly, based on monitoring results of soft soil foundation, the consolidation parameters of soil layer are back-calculated according to the three-point method. Then, combined with the theory of the consolidation degree of graded loading, the formula that can predict settlement under different loading conditions are derived. Eventually, the practical application of the method is verified by the prediction and comparative analysis of measured settlements based on engineering examples. The result of research shows that the method can predict the foundation settlement after loading during construction of engineering fill. This method has obvious advantages over the traditional curve fitting method and can guide the actual engineering construction.

This technical article presents the influence of sample quality on the compressibility parameters and undrained shear strength (cu) of soft soils from the Vistula Marshlands. The analysis covers: (1) quality of soft soil according to three criteria: void ratio (Δe/e0 index), volumetric strain (Δɛv) and Cr/Cc ratio; (2) influence of storage time on quality; (3) influence of sample quality on undrained shear strength (cu), and (4) reliability of compression and undrained shear strength parameters estimation. The sample quality of three different soft soils (peat, organic clays, and organic silts) was investigated using dataset of geotechnical investigations from the Vistula Marshlands. The reliability of oedometer tests and compressibility parameters determination was shown. Different undrained shear strength estimates (from lab and field tests) were juxtaposed with sample quality. In situ estimates of undrained shear strength were compared with results of triaxial tests and direct simple shear test on reconstituted samples as well as SHANSEP estimates. The results of research are grouped in seven lessons. The most important outcomes are: (1) the quality of samples is at best moderate or poor and there is no significant influence of storage time on sample quality, (2) regardless of testing method, the undrained shear strength natural variability of the Vistula Marshlands soft soils is between 20% and 50% depending on deposit depth and soil type, (3) the most accurate estimation of undrained shear strength can be obtained from field vane test (FVT) while unconsolidated, undrained compression (UUC) triaxial tests should be avoided, (4) SHANSEP approach can be considered as a valuable estimate of cu (next to the FVTs), which additionally allows in relatively easy way to establish lower and upper bounds of cu.

The paper presents the results of laboratory tests on the influence of the dynamic replacement column formation technology, i.e. the depth of the initial crater, the height of its filling and the impact energy on the shape of the columns and their length. The tests were carried out at a stand enabling the observation of the driving process. The test results indicate the possibility of making the longest columns of optimal shape with the use of less energy with partial filling of the initial crater equal to the height of the pounder.

This paper deals with the problem of determining the particle size distribution of selected organic soils from the vicinity of Rzeszów (Poland), using a laser diffractometer method, the knowledge of which will allow to determine the degree of differentiation or similarity of the tested organic soils in this aspect. The HELOS Laser Diffractometer manufactured by Sympatec GmbH was used for the tests. For proper analysis, the researches results in the form of graphs were grouped according to the content of organic substances in accordance with the standard classification. The conducted research was primarily aimed at presenting the grain differentiation and particle size distribution in terms of the applied method and comparing the test results of samples of selected, different organic soils, prepared using the same dispersion procedure and carried out in exactly the same test conditions, generated using capabilities of a diffractometer. Summing up, the laser diffractometer method presented in the article, although not fully verified in the case of organic soils, seems to be a the perspective method with capabilities allowing it to be nominated as an exceptionally useful method for the investigations of soft soils, including organic soils.

The dynamic replacement columns are formed by driving a coarse-grained material into a soft soil by means of repeatable drops of a pounder. The final shapes of the columns are non-cylindrical and depend on the subsoil conditions. This paper presents results of the laboratory study on influence of the thickness of the soft soil on the displacements of the backfill aggregate during the driving process. A test box with one acrylic-glass wall was prepared, in which, over a load-bearing sand layer, a soft soil of various thicknesses (Hs = 0.3, 0.4 or 0.5 m) was modelled using a semi-transparent acrylic polymer. The displacements of the backfill gravel particles were tracked by means of a high-speed camera. The material was driven by dropping a 0.2 m high (Hp) pounder. The results revealed that the distance between the bottom of the first crater and the top of the sand layer played an important role in directing the particles. At Hs/Hp = 2.5 pear-shaped floating columns were formed as the grains in the side zones were less affected by the pounder drops and their paths deviated from the vertical axis by not more than 50°. In case of Hs/Hp = 2.0 and 1.5, the column bases reached the bearing layer and the impact energy caused much larger vertical and horizontal displacements of the backfill material in the side zones - the observed largest angles were equal to 64° and even 90°, respectively. Eventually, the final column shapes resembled a non-symmetrical barrel and a truncated cone.

Prediction of soft soil sub-grades settlement has been a big challenge for geotechnical engineers that are responsible for the design of roadbed embankment. The characteristics of low strength, poor permeability, high water contents, and high compressibility are dominant in soft soils, which result in a huge settlement in the case of long-term loading. The settlement prediction in soft soil subgrades of Jiehui Expressway A1, Guangdong, China, is the focus of this study. For this purpose, the necessary data of settlement is collected throughout the project execution. The numerical analysis is conducted by using the Richards model based on Linear Least Squares Iteration (LLS-I) method to calculate and predict the expected settlement. The traditional settlement prediction methods, including the hyperbolic method, exponential curve method, and pearl curve method, are applied on field settlement data of soft soil subgrades of Jiehui Expressway A1. The results show that the Richards model based on Linear Least Squares Iteration (LLS-I) method has high precision, and it has proven to be a better option for settlement prediction of soft soil sub-grades. The model analysis indicates that the mean absolute percentage error (MAPE) can be minimized as compared to other soft soil sub-grades settlement prediction methods. Hence, Richards's model-based LLS-I method has a capability for simulation and settlement prediction of soft soil subgrades.

Content available Modelling the time-dependent behaviour of soft soils
EN
Time dependence of soft soils has already been thoroughly investigated. The knowledge on creep and relaxation phenomena is generally available in the literature. However, it is still rarely applied in practice. Regarding the organic soils, geotechnical engineers mostly base their calculations on the simple assumptions. Yet, as presented within this article, the rate-dependent behaviour of soft soils is a very special and important feature. It influences both the strength and the stiffness of a soil depending on time. It is, thus, significant to account for time dependence in the geotechnical design when considering the soft soils. This can result in a more robust and economic design of geotechnical structures. Hence, the up-to-date possibilities of regarding creep in practice, which are provided by the existing theories, are reviewed herein. In this article, we first justify the importance of creep effects in practical applications. Next, we present the fundamental theories explaining the time-dependent behaviour of organic soils. Finally, the revision of the existing constitutive models that can be used in numerical simulations involving soft soils is introduced. Both the models that are implemented in the commercial geotechnical software and some more advanced models that take into account further aspects of soft soils behaviour are revised. The assumptions, the basic equations along with the advantages and the drawbacks of the considered models are described.

Bearing capacity of the working platform for heavy tracks was analysed using Distinct Layout Optimization (DLO) method. The platform layer constructed from cohesionless soils is resting on weak cohesive subgrade. Different thickness of the platform, its effective angle of internal friction and undrained shear strength of the soft soil were taken into consideration. Kinematic method permits different failure mechanisms to be analyzed. Margin of safety for a given load and subsoil conditions was determined using two approaches: increasing the load or decreasing the shear strength up to failure. The results were compared with solution proposed in BRE recommendations.

In this article a tyre is investigated which moves in lateral direction, i.e. perpendicular to its regular rolling direction, through sand, which is one representative of a deformable soil. This kind of motion could be a result of skidding of a car where the vehicle slides laterally over the side verge. In order to investigate this motion in the first step the influence of the compliance of the tyre is studied; the result is that a flexible tyre behaves similar to a stiff one. Therefore, in the second step, the simulations and the experimental investigations of the tyre are restricted to a stiff, nearly rigid tyre. The deformable soil is simulated using the Discrete Element Method (DEM). In order to estimate and identify the parameters of the DEM model, a method incorporating simple experiments is described. In the 6th section DEM simulations and experimental results for a full tyre-soil-interaction are presented.
