The paper presents a line-side sensorless control of PWM rectifier with a virtual grid flux vector orientation and a sliding-mode approach. The grid currents and virtual flux are estimated using a sliding-mode current observer mixed with a nonlinear asymptotic observer and a virtual grid flux estimator. The only inputs of this nonlinear observer system are measured values of a DC-link current and voltage, as well as a PWM control pattern. The fast dynamics and robustness of the proposed sensorless control system has been presented in simulation and experimental results.

The paper presents a laboratory test-bench with a three-phase two-level PWM rectifier. The setup is based on a 3.3kW integrated power module and a 32-bit fixed-point digital signal processor with a Simulink auto coder for rapid prototyping of control strategies. The setup has been diversified into separate modules for different tasks: grid voltage and grid current measurement modules, hardware dead-time block with IGBT gate signal inverted logic driver, analogue signal processing block for sensor-to-processor interface, auxiliary control electronics and power circuits with overvoltage and overload protections. These modules assembled in unit provide entire functionality of the laboratory setup with the PWM rectifier for flexible and fast implementation of control strategies either for their further development or for the purpose of didactics. In order to demonstrate the operation of the proposed test-bench Sliding-Mode Voltage Oriented Control with ?-PWM has been implemented to control the PWM rectifier. Numerous experimental results have been presented and discussed.

An amplitude-selective damping is a phenomenon in hydraulic shock absorbers where a pressure drop is a function of physical displacement even at a constant flow rate. The combination is often claimed to provide less damping for small displacement inputs as well as ordinary ride on vehicles. At the same time the system offers good ride and handling metrics by augmenting the damping force during such vehicle manoeuvres. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to investigate the dynamic performance of a simple two-degree-of-freedom (2DOF) system with an amplitude-selective damping type shock absorber. In the paper the authors derive & analyze a model of the shock absorber on a component level, then study the influence the device has on the suspension behaviour within the prescribed range of frequencies.

The paper presents the novel approach to the sliding-mode-based modulation technique in application to the PWM rectifier with the minimized number of the necessary voltage and current transducers. The crucial and technically most inconvenient part of this sensorless technique is the preliminary reconstruction of the line three-phase currents based on the proper sampling of the DC-link current within the specified PWM periods. The reconstructed grid currents are then used to estimate their smooth counterparts as well as the grid three-phase voltages. This can be realized through the application of the sliding-mode current observer for the grid voltage mixed with the conventional nonlinear asymptotic observer for the grid voltage. The novel approach to the design of the sliding-mode control for the PWM rectifier is based on the application of the nonlinear current controllers in the d-q coordinate frame and the direct look-up table-based modulation. This solution allows eliminating the back transformation into the three-phase coordinate system. The selected computational results based on the multi-rate simulations have been presented and discussed.

The paper presents the sliding-mode observer-based sensorless control of an ac adjustable speed drive with induction motor, voltage-source inverter and reversible AC/DC line-side converter. The sensorless control is applied to the AC/DC and DC/AC converter confining the number of the used transducers and eliminating the rotor speed direct acquisition. The analysis of the proposed drive system based on the numerous computer simulations is carried out and its results are presented. The virtual grid flux vector estimated in the sliding-mode observer yields robustness against the line voltage distortions. In result, its angular position does not depend on the grid conditions. The rotor flux and speed observer provides insensitiveness to certain extend of the fluctuations of the motor parameters. The proposed sensorless control of the double-sided converter provides four-quadrant operation of the induction drive at the acceptable computational effort and thus at inexpensive costs of its hardware realization.

The paper presents the decoupled vector control of the PWM rectifier with the nonlinear DC-link voltage regulation and the load compensating feedforward. The concept of the proposed control system is based on Voltage Oriented Control with Space-Vector Pulse Width Modulation (SV-PWM). For the high-performance operation of the PWM rectifier and the satisfactory current tracing the decoupled current control has been introduced. The performance of the linear PI controller of the DC-link voltage is strictly dependent on its settings and it may introduce a disadvantageous voltage overshoot under a heavy load impact. In order to improve the transient response of the DC-link voltage control loop a load compensation has been proposed. The different approach to the control of the DC-link voltage based on the regulation of the square power of the DC voltage has been introduced. The algorithm of the proposed nonlinear control system of the PWM rectifier has been implemented on a fixed-point 150MHz DSP evaluation board of an experimental setup with a power converter. The selected experimental results have been presented and discussed.

The paper presents the analysis of the modified control strategy for the AC/DC line-side converter with the Direct Power Control strategy. The application of the chattering-free sliding-mode controller with a smoothing integrator of the DC-link voltage has been presented. The design of the Direct Power Control method for the AC/DC line-side converters is based on the cascade structure. Hence the dynamics of the line current transients is forced by the inner control loop. The dynamics of the DC-link voltage is regulated by the outer control loop which is superior to the inner one. The DC-link voltage controller produces the output values which are simultaneously the input values for the controllers of the inner loop. Assuming that the DC-link voltage is controlled by the fast-switching sliding-mode controller the chattering phenomenon has an extremely negative influence on the quality of the operation of the inner controllers and must be eliminated. The novel chattering-free sliding-mode controller of the DC-link voltage has been designed and examined. The simulation and experimental results of the presented technique achieved with the help of the 3kVA power converter with the fixed-point DSP have been demonstrated and concluded.

Klasyczny regulator ślizgowy, charakteryzujący się szybkim przełączaniem znaku sygnału o dużej wartości wzmocnienia, zastosowany w pętli regulacji napięcia stałego obwodu pośredniczącego powoduje silne odkształcenia w przebiegach prądów sieciowych, prowadząc często do niestabilności układu sterowania przekształtnika. Przedstawiono i omówiono wybrane wyniki badań symulacyjnych i eksperymentalnych zaproponowanego układu sterowania nieliniowego przekształtnikiem sieciowym AC/DC.

The paper presents a sliding-mode approach to design of control systems of the AC/DC line-side converter. The idea of control of the line-side converter is based on appropriate switching of the power devices in suitable time intervals determined by the control system. Since the reversible converter consists of controllable power switches it seems to be an ideal plant to implement sliding mode control. This kind of the nonlinear control strategy yields a discontinuous control law and has been implemented to direct control of the power transistors. Decreasing costs of hardware applications result in the growth of interest in using reversible rectifiers. This is due to sensorless operation. In this paper a sliding mode observer for source voltage has been designed and implemented into control system. A cascaded control structure has been chosen and a precise mathematical background for the observer and proposed control method has been presented. Simulation results of the examined control system of AC/DC line-side converter have been demonstrated and discussed.

The paper presents an analysis of vector control system of induction drive witch AC/DC/AC double-sided converter. In particular the start-up, driving-mode and regenerative braking-mode of the drive system were examined and discussed. Virtual Flux based Direct Power Control (VF-DPC) of AC/DC line-side converter and Direct Torque Control of DC/AC motor-side converter were proposed and described. The drive system analysis based on computer simulations is carried out. The main task of the line-side converter control system is to maintain the required value of the dc-link voltage, while line currents should be almost sinusoidal and in phase with respective phase line voltages to satisfy the unity power factor condition. Direct Torque Control was chosen as a precise and not complicated control strategy of induction motor fed by Voltage Source Inverter. Both control structures - bounded up into one control system of the AC/DC/AC double-sided converter - provide excellent dynamics in four-quadrant operation with returning energy of braking back to the mains.

Most variable-speed drive systems use an AC/DC/AC or AC/AC power conversion procedure. Currently, standard adjustable speed drives consist of a diode rectifier and a PWM voltage source inverter. Another alternative is controlled rectifier and a current source inverter. Today, due to the increased use of power electronics appliances and converters, the quality of power in the majority of the ac supply systems is reducing. Nonlinear currents drawn from the utility grid by those equipments imply mains voltage distortion and other problems resulting in harmonic pollution and electromagnetic interference implications. The paper presents a survey the most popular traditional and modern topologies of power electronics systems of converters used for adjustable speed AC motors. The topologies of front end rectifiers and motor inverters are presented. The special attention is paid for double-sided converters, multilevel converters, cascaded converters and dual inverter fed open-end stator winding of induction motor. The topologies of recently developed AC/AC and AC/DC/AC matrix converters are also discussed. The control systems and performance of presented converters is described.

The paper presents a comparative study of nonlinear control techniques for AC/DC line-side converter. Virtual Flux Based Direct Power Control for AC/DC converter has been modified by adding nonlinear DC-link controllers. In particular, design methods of robust control has been presented and used to design robust controllers: sliding-mode controller, fuzzy-logic controller and sliding-mode fuzzy controller. The sliding-mode method uses the concept of a sliding line which divides the state space into two semi-planes and defines the distance to the sliding line. Since the system trajectory reaches the sliding line, it cannot leave it. This is achieved despite parameters fluctuation and disturbances, being the main characteristic of robustness. Fuzzy logic controllers are designed by using the phase plane determined by error e and change of error e . The phase plane is next parted into two semi-planes by means of sliding line. This makes diagonal form of fuzzy logic control similar to sliding-mode with boundary layers. The goal of the control systems presented in the paper is to maintain the output dc-link voltage at the required level, while line currents should be ideally sinusoidal and in phase with respective phase voltages to satisfy the unity power factor (UPF) condition.

The paper presents the application of PLL technique in AC drive system. In most standard speed control systems the shaft velocity is measured using tachogenerator and is given in the form of DC voltage. This voltage proportional to shaft velocity is compared with the voltage given at the input of the speed controller. Tachogenerator must meet high requirements as linear speed-voltage characteristics, ability of detection the velocity direction, negligible temperature errors and acceptable pulsations of output voltage. Its accuracy depends on magnetic flux (time-limited stability of permanent magnets - magnetic aging). Besides tachogenerator generates no signal when run at very low speed and produces commutation noises. The core of using PLL technique is the conversion of input and output velocity signals of standard speed control from voltages to proportional frequency signals. The wanted input value of velocity is given to the input of speed control system not as a voltage signal but as a frequency signal. The shaft velocity is measured using resolver that gives sine signal of frequency proportional to the actual shaft speed. This signal is next synchronized with input frequency trough the control process. Then the angular velocity of the motor shaft meets perfectly the input velocity.
