This article discusses integrating electromobility into Sustainable Urban Mobility Plans (SUMPs) to reduce environmental impact, enhance accessibility, and improve public and energy security. Increasing urban populations and rising motorization rates necessitate transitioning from conventional combustion-engine vehicles to more sustainable alternatives, such as electric public transport and charging infrastructure for private vehicles. The key elements of SUMPs include developing charging infrastructure for public and private transport, replacing traditional fleets with low and zero-emission vehicles, and designing efficient transport networks with ITS systems. In Poland, cities with over 50,000 inhabitants are required to achieve a 30% share of zero-emission or biomethane-powered buses by 2028, while cities with over 100,000 inhabitants will be mandated to purchase only zero-emission buses starting in 2026. Energy security plays a crucial role in the successful implementation of electromobility. Ensuring a stable energy supply, integrating renewable energy sources, and implementing smart grid solutions with demand management systems are essential to prevent grid overloads during peak demand periods. The deployment of energy storage systems and decentralized power sources will further enhance the resilience of the power infrastructure. The success of electromobility initiatives also depends on stakeholder engagement, public awareness campaigns, and financial incentives to promote the adoption of electric vehicles. SUMPs serve as strategic tools to achieve long-term sustainability and energy resilience in urban areas.

This paper presents a simulation model of marine container terminal operations, built to analyse and optimise port performance. Simulation experiments conducted to validate the model revealed the impact of congestion on performance and the importance of proactive capacity management. The results point to the need to keep yard cranking below critical thresholds to avoid bottlenecks. Future research directions include integrating real-time data analysis and assessing the impact of external factors on terminal operations. Overall, the model can serve as a tool for analysing operational performance and supporting decision-making in the maritime logistics sector.

erminale intermodalne same w sobie nie tworzą dużej liczby miejsc pracy. Generują dochody do budżetów lokalnych i krajowych. They generate revenues for local and national budgets. They have great military significance. A significant factor inhibiting the positive impact of intermodal terminals on economic and regional development is the low geographical accessibility of terminals and the fact that not all terminals are made available to all interested parties on equal and non-discriminatory terms. The article analyses possible solutions to these problems.

This article aims to analyze the benefits associated with reducing external transport costs resulting from shifting some road transport to rail. The research focused primarily on the cargo flows that transit Poland year after year using road transport. The analysis assumes the use of intermodal technology for transporting semi-trailers on pocket wagons. The external transport costs considered in the study, which serve as the basis for comparing road transport with intermodal rail transport, include air pollution, climate change, noise, accidents, congestion, well-to-tank emissions, and habitat degradation. In the study, external costs in road and rail transport were related to the unit of transport work. Calculations of external transport costs on a daily and annual basis for a sample reference transport route were based on these cost indicators developed for the European Union. Because the energy mix in the EU differs from that in Poland, the volume of harmful exhaust emissions from road transport and electric rail transport was additionally determined. To determine external costs and the feasibility of shifting some road transport to rail, the volume of freight flows transported in Poland was analyzed, as well as the available intermodal technologies that enable the shift of freight flows from road to rail. The rationale for developing this type of transport was also presented. The results of the analysis conducted for a sample transit route indicate that road transport generates almost three times higher external costs than rail transport with an electric locomotive and twice as many external costs as rail transport with a diesel locomotive. At the same time, road transport generates almost three times more CO2 than rail transport with an electric locomotive.

Uwzględnione w badaniach koszty zewnętrzne transportu będące podstawą do porównania przewozów drogowych z przewozami kolejowymi intermodalnymi to: emisja zanieczyszczeń, zmiany klimatu, hałas, wypadki, kongestia, emisja od źródła do zbiornika, degradacja siedlisk przyrodniczych. W badaniu koszty zewnętrzne w transporcie drogowym i kolejowym odniesiono do jednostki pracy przewozowej. Wyniki przeprowadzonych analiz dla przykładowej trasy przewozu w tranzycie wskazują, iż transport drogowy generuje prawie trzykrotnie wyższe koszty zewnętrzne niż transport kolejowy z lokomotywą elektryczną i dwukrotnie większe niż transport kolejowy z lokomotywą spalinową. Jednocześnie transport drogowy generuje prawie trzykrotnie więcej CO2 niż transport kolejowy z lokomotywą elektryczną.

This article investigates the impact of container yard layout on the cargo handling time of intermodal trains operating at container terminals, with a particular emphasis on the number of stacking layers used in container storage. The study focuses on how varying vertical storage configurations influence the duration of crane loading cycles as well as the energy consumption of transshipment equipment. In addition to the stacking layout, the analysis incorporates several operational constraints that are critical in intermodal rail transport, including the locking pin arrangements on railcars, container gross weights, and axle load limitations specific to intermodal wagons. The theoretical section outlines the fundamental role of intermodal terminals within global logistics and supply chains. It delves into the organization of container storage within terminal yards, highlighting its influence on handling performance and the overall turnaround time of intermodal transport units. Furthermore, the article includes a comprehensive literature review that examines state-of-the-art research on container yard storage strategies, allocation rules, and various op timization approaches aimed at improving yard efficiency. To evaluate the operational impact of different stacking strategies, a simulation model was developed using the FlexSim platform. The model allows for detailed analysis of crane cycle times in relation to stacking configurations, while also accounting for the energy usage of cranes and handling equipment. The simulations were carried out for a range of stacking scenarios to reflect real-world variabil ity and constraints encountered in container terminals. The findings reveal that the relationship between the number of stacking layers and train loading time or energy consumption is non-linear and often counterintuitive. Increasing the number of layers does not necessarily lead to proportional gains or losses in efficiency. Instead, certain configu rations may result in operational bottlenecks or increased energy use due to additional crane repositioning and con tainer relocations. The research not only provides quantitative evidence on the operational consequences of yard design decisions but also offers practical insights for terminal planners and operators. These insights can support both short-term operational planning and long-term strategic investments aimed at optimizing terminal performance and sustainability.

This paper addresses the improvement of energy efficiency in intermodal freight trains by reducing aerodynamic drag through optimization of container arrangement on railcars. In current terminal practice, loading plans are usually driven by local criteria such as minimizing crane operating time or travel distance, which may result in non-compact cargo configurations and increased aerodynamic losses during train movement. A mathematical model of aerodynamic drag is formulated using position-dependent drag coefficients and a gap-penalty function that reflects the length and location of empty slots in the train consist. The loading problem is modelled as a constrained assignment task with the primary objective of minimizing crane working time. Three approaches to generating the initial loading plan are analyzed: a slot-priority heuristic, a greedy algorithm, and an ant colony optimization algorithm. On this basis, a dedicated post-processing algorithm is applied, which iteratively relocates containers towards the front of the train, reduces gaps between units, and preserves all technical and operational constraints. The method is implemented by linking a FlexSim simulation model of an inland intermodal terminal with Python-based optimization procedures. Nine scenarios with different shares of containers from the road zone and storage yard are evaluated using 16 replications each. The results show that the proposed procedure can reduce estimated aerodynamic drag by approximately 5–9%, at the cost of increased crane operating time. An energy balance comparison indicates that the additional terminal energy consumption is significantly lower than the traction energy savings, confirming that aerodynamic criteria should be explicitly incorporated into train loading strategies.

The article considers modern challenges and threats to the operation of ships in the liner form of traffic organization. Taking into account the dynamics of liner shipping development and its exceptional importance in ensuring international trade, it is proposed to analyze the main trends that are recorded both by statistical and analytical publications and by scientists from different fields of knowledge. Since any accident, under certain conditions, can be legally recognized as force majeure, maritime practice provides the widest range of challenges and threats to the commercial activities of enterprises. The originality of the review lies in the fact that the whole range of potential challenges is applied to the liner shipping sector. In this article, the analysis is done in several steps: 1) incidents that may have consequences of different nature (for human life and health, material losses, environmental damage) were grouped into 6 main groups; 2) articles indexed in Scopus Web of Science databases of the period 2020-2024 were investigated to substantiate the importance of these challenges specifically on international liner shipping; 3) the link between the challenges in ICC and BIMCO terminology and articles in relation to each of the proposed groups was established; 4) statistical material and individual cases for the same study period (2020-2024) for each group of challenges were provided to substantiate the importance of the impact on liner shipping. The study showed causal relationships between the challenges to liner shipping (such as geopolitics-economics link or forces of nature and economics/operational, etc.), correlation of scientific publications and recent challenges. In general, the article gives an idea of the content of modern threats to liner shipping in terms of source, interconnection of these threats and nature of consequences.

W artykule scharakteryzowano zagadnienia dotyczące umieszczania dużych nalepek ostrzegawczych i znakowania kontenerów z towarami niebezpiecznymi klasy 1 używanych w intermodalnych i multimodalnych łańcuchach transportowych.
