This paper presents the design of an easily reconfigurable signal generation and acquisition system for integrated circuits testing. The system benefits from National Instruments (NI) single software and hardware platform, and it can be fully programmed using the LabVIEW environment by a single specialist. The system utilizes a digital I/O only NI sbRIO 9609 controller and proposes a PCB extension with digital-to-analog and analog-to-digital converters for the generation of pseudo-analog signals with a resolution of 11 bits at 5 MSps rate, and signal acquisition.

The subject of this article is to evaluate the repeatability and usability of a proprietary light pollution measurement system that enables both stationary measurements and those using unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs). Results from the preliminary laboratory tests demonstrated correlation with reference measurements obtained from a certified commercial device. Additionally, dedicated software enables real-time analysis of results and the entire system is intuitive to use, even by unskilled users.

Light pollution is usually defined as an environmental disturbance created by excessive and inappropriate use of artificial light during the nighttime. Complete elimination of light pollution is not possible, but it is possible to minimize it. At present, there are no consistent and complete regulations in Polish legislation that explicitly deal with reducing the scale of this phenomenon. The only legal acts refer to very general requirements for obstructive light on building facades and light-emitting advertisements. Requirements and recommendations for obstructive light from outdoor lighting infrastructure are contained primarily in lighting standards and publications of the International Commission on Illumination, but the application of these recommendations is not mandatory.

The transition of urban lighting systems to LED technology has brought about a significant improvement in energy efficiency (140–180 lm/W), but it has also revealed a paradox: the high emission of blue light (440–500 nm) from white pc-LEDs causes intense ambient light pollution (ALAN). The article presents the CIE environmental zone classification system (E1–E4) along with technical requirements for corelated color temperature (CCT), upper hemisphere radiance (ULR), and illuminance levels. The light emission mechanisms in phosphor-converted LEDs are analyzed, including the spectral characteristics of YAG:Ce phosphors, nitrides, and quantum dots. Alternative LED architectures were discussed: amber LEDs (585–595 nm), filtered pc-LEDs reducing blue emission below 5%, and hybrid RGB systems enabling dynamic spectrum control.
Light pollution is a growing problem in developed countries. One of its categories, often associated with this concept, is night sky glow. This glow is caused by scattering light from artificial ground light sources on atmospheric particles. The paper indicates that street lighting may be the primary source of light scattered on these particles. This is caused by often outdated luminaires or their installation, which does not protect the surroundings from light pollution. The second, even more important factor increasing the brightness of the sky glow may be the reflection of incident light upwards by the street surface. Satellite images of the Earth's surface allow for determining the radiance from a given area, determined by the amount of light scattered in the atmosphere. However, the part of this light associated with street lighting is difficult to separate from the background of other artificial ground light sources. In 2020, due to the COVID-19 pandemic and reduced traffic at night, the authorities of several municipalities in the Małopolska province in Poland decided to switch off street lighting at night. This was the first time street lighting was switched off for part of the year in large areas and entire cities. Analysis of satellite data allowed us to determine that the luminance from the analysed localities decreased by almost 70% after switching off city lighting. The analysis also allowed us to estimate the energy losses of city lighting resulting from lighting fixtures that do not protect the surroundings from light pollution.

This paper concerns the phenomenon of light pollution. Its goal is to identify light sources in the Wawel Royal Castle that influence this phenomenon. The term of the discussed phenomenon is given, with emphasis on its categories. Then, the impact of light pollution on the environment was discussed. During the research, light sources were identified and divided according to their type. Then it was determined how individual light sources affect the occurrence of light pollution. The results contain information about the location of light sources, their type, colour and direction of light beam. The authors present them in photographic documentation and a map of Wawel Hill. Additionally, changes were proposed in the external lighting of the Wawel Royal Castle, aimed at reducing the occurrence of light pollution. A total of 294 light sources were inventoried, of which 82 were classified as abnormal, 59 as normal, and 63 as partially correct. The rest were unavailable or unused.

Proper lighting of the place of residence at night, especially on winter evenings, is extremely important both in terms of ensuring safety and comfort of sleep at night. Unfortunately, housing estates built several dozen years ago are lit by archaic, usually largely neglected, HPS type luminaires, usually incorrectly installed. This lighting is most often insufficient, while generating various forms of light pollution. Currently, in Kraków, modern LED luminaires are systematically installed in housing estate lighting installations. The accusation is often raised in the media that the new lighting is not sufficient and is even worse than the previous one. In August 2023, the entire lighting installation of the Żywieckie Housing Estate in Kraków was modernised, which allowed these allegations to be verified. Comparison of the illuminance values and luminance distribution in various parts of this estate before and after the above-mentioned modernisation allowed us to conclude that currently the lighting of its space is correct, ensuring the comfort of residents, while meeting the requirements of Polish lighting standards.
Urban sprawl is a nuisance – both economically and ecologically speaking. Among the causes of this nuisance is light pollution; both the scale of the light pollution and the spatial expansion of suburbs in Poland increased significantly during the period 2012–2022. The most significant light pollution occurs in urbanized areas in general; however, the scattered developments of suburbs make the problem of light pollution in these areas disproportionate to the population density as compared to cities. The research that is described below analyzed changes in the amounts of light that were emitted into the sky (radiance) as were calculated on the basis of observational data from the Suomi NPP meteorological satellite as well as housing production dynamics. Data regarding both radiance and housing production was acquired for communes and then aggregated to larger areas depending on the urban, suburban, or rural character of each commune. Then, the agglomeration areas were analyzed – distinguishing between urban centers and non-urban agglomeration areas (suburbs). Two convergence indices were analyzed: Spearman’s rank correlation coefficient, and coefficient of determination R2. It turns out that, in suburban areas, both indices returned much higher convergence rates between light pollution and housing construction than in the cases of the cities. The causes of this phenomenon need further research; nevertheless, two possible top-down solutions of this problem may be lighting masterplans and the modernization of lighting fixtures.

Light pollution in the form of artificial sky glow affects not only the immediate surroundings of the towns that generate it but also more distant areas, including protected regions. This study examines the extent of the impact of the artificial sky glow, originating from Zakopane and the surrounding towns, on the western part of the Tatra National Park (TPN) in Poland. Due to the specific challenges of conducting night measurements in mountainous terrain, the valleys of the Western Tatras– Lejowa, Kościeliska and Chochołowska - were selected for the study. Sky brightness measurements were taken using Sky Quality Meter photometers (type SQM-L) under both cloudless and completely overcast conditions. The results show that in the case of a cloudless sky, the range of sky glow from nearby towns extends approximately 2-2.5 km from the valleys outlets. However, under cloudy conditions, this range increases to approximately 6 km. It was also observed that the ground illumination caused by the brightened sky is significantly lower than that produced by the brightest natural object in the sky, the Moon. Nevertheless, the night sky’s brightness exceeds natural levels, which undoubtedly affects local mountain ecosystems.

This publication is devoted to the problem of lighting in parking spaces ina housing estate. Both aspects related to the safety of their users and thepotential impact on the natural environment through the phenomenon of lightpollution are discussed. Parking spaces are classified in terms of their purposeand lighting. It was found that half of them are insufficiently illuminated, often bylight sources originally intended to illuminate green areas or streets. As a result, the illuminance of their surface is much lower than the value specified bystandards for this type of public space. It was found that this form of outdoorlighting does not directly make a noticeable contribution to the artificial skyglow, which is the main form of light pollution. However, isolated cases ofexcessive lighting in parking spaces have been recorded. In this case, the lightreflected from the pavement or the street makes a significant contribution toartificial sky glow. It is suggested to replace the lighting in parking spaces withdedicated sets of LED or MH luminaires, which would minimise the impact ofthis lighting on the environment while ensuring the proper lighting of both thesurface and the vehicles parked on them.

Parking lots, often of a large area, are becoming a typical element of the landscape of modern cities and their surroundings. They can be found both at shopping malls, within office complexes or near communication centres. Illumination of their surface must ensure, above all, the protection of parked vehicles and their users, but also minimally interfere with the natural environment. As part of the research, an analysis of the lighting of a parking lot in one of the office complexes in Katowice, as well as a complex of parking lots surrounding one of the shopping centres in Krakow, was carried out. In both cases, the proper construction of all the light sources used was found. The phenomenon of glare related to the illumination of neighbouring buildings was found. However, the main problem is the presence of underexposed areas, which is related to both the incorrect spatial distribution of the lamps used, as well as the shielding of part of the lighting by various types of terrain objects, such as billboards or trees.
Pollution of the night sky by artificial light has now become an important element of the modern city landscape. The decline in the quality of the sky observed at night in urban areas has already been noticed even by residents unaware of its origin. A starry sky is nowadays not easy to observe even in places far from large conurbations or smaller cities. More and more places are losing access to the previously natural privilege of observing the dark sky, and their inhabitants are thus systematically exposed to all the direct and indirect negative effects of this phenomenon. Monitoring the brightness of the night sky is gaining interest from a growing number of interdisciplinary research groups being established around the world, including Poland. In Toruń, the first measurements of the magnitude of this phenomenon, together with the determination of its spatial scale, were started using handheld devices in 2017. In the following years, efforts were made to improve the data acquisition process by creating a prototype – a technology demonstrator and, consequently, a commercial version of an automatic device measuring the surface brightness of the night sky. This paper presents the stages of the project aimed at developing a light pollution monitoring system, which has been consistently implemented in Toruń. The most important component of this system is a measuring device of our own design and construction. The monitoring system designed and operating in Toruń, starting in 2019, is being further developed with new components and monitoring (measurement) sites being systematically added, making the city’s observation network increasingly dense. The devices built using the LoRa standard for wireless data exchange implement the concept of the Internet of Things, fitting in with the objectives of a smart city.
Light pollution has a detrimental effect on astronomy. Artificial light emitted from outdoor lighting increases the brightness of the night sky, making it difficult to observe astronomical objects. The spectral power distribution of artificial light sources is one of the key factors determining how much the night sky is deteriorated by light pollution. The ongoing replacement of discharge lamps with LED sources may have a major impact on astronomy because LED spectra usually cover the entire visible radiation range. This paper provides an analysis of the impact of LED sources with correlated color temperature in the range from 1000 K to approximately 10 000 K on visual and instrumental astronomical observations. For each analyzed artificial source, the Starlight Contamination Degree (SCD) index, i.e. a quantity that allows for quick evaluation of the impact of the sources on the night sky, is calculated. The reflection of artificial light from different ground surfaces and its scattering in the atmosphere was included in the calculation of the SCD index. LED lamps with very low values of correlated color temperature (CCT) and color rendering index (CRI) were found to possibly have a similar or even smaller impact on astronomical observations than sodium discharge lamps. Moreover, professional astronomical observations are more affected by LED lamps than visual observations, even for lamps with the lowest CCT and CRI. Thus, additional measures (e.g. reducing lumen output) should be applied to protect observational conditions. The results of the study help to assess which LED lamps can be used, and which should be avoided in the protection zones around astronomical observing sites.
Umożliwi to koordynację transformacji energetycznej, obniży emisyjności układów przestrzennych i podniesie walory estetyczne przestrzeni.

There is a lack of urban planning documents defining a coherent lighting strategy for the city. Finding a way to reduce light chaos is crucial for the city's further proper development and ensuring a good quality of life for its residents. The research and concepts presented in the article identify the aspects of poor lighting and then, at three levels of detail: the entire city, key types of public spaces, and urban and technical design details, present methods for improvement. The authors propose the creation of lighting masterplans, which should become important tools for local and strategic planning. This will enable the coordination of energy transformation, reduce the emissions of spatial systems, and enhance the aesthetic qualities of the spaces.
