The paper discusses lessons learned from development of the "Carpathia" geoportal, which is a vital component of the project: .Protection and sustainable development of the Carpathians in a transnational framework.. The discussed project is not only an element of a wider EU programme INTERREG IIIB CADSES, but also supports the implementation of the resolution by the intergovernmental framework Carpathian Convention on the same subject, i.e. protection and development of Carpathian area. Governments of the Czech Republic, Hungary, Poland, Romania, Serbia, Slovakia and the Ukraine are the parties of this convention. The paper presents both technical aspects of development and implementation of CARPATHIA geoportal and the experiences of participating in a large international project using EU funds. The introduction presents the background and needs for building a geoportal as a component of the whole project. The main goal of the geoportal, and the whole web portal of the Carpathian project, is to present and popularize the project results among a wide circle of users. Undoubtedly, the most important of these results are spatial in nature. These results include reference maps of the whole Carpathian area (from Romania to Austria) as well as a range of thematic maps presenting socioeconomic, cultural or environmental information. Reference maps play significant role in communication within the framework of the project and form the foundation on which the partners can present results of their works and pilot projects. Thematic maps, on the other hand, form a kind of Carpathia atlas, destined mainly for external users, including public administration, non-governmental organizations, scientists and also tourists. The paper describes geoportal characteristics and functions and also technologies used for its development. Access to the aforementioned varied spatial data, encompassing raster and vector data, photos etc., gathered in database and metadata storeis ensured by built-in previewing capabilities of the geoportaland of its metadata system. At the moment, there are no plans to provide users with data in digital form, with the obvious exception of project partners. However, the data previewing mechanism provides interactive print option of raster selection results for all users. Apart from metadata system mechanisms for data exploration and management of all spatial data in the geoportal, the geoportal provides an advanced toolkit for interactive spatial data analysis based on WebGIS technology. Among many criteria of selecting technologies and tools for the geoportal development, one of the most important was compliance with the requirements of INSPIRE Directive, and especially with corresponding standards. Geoportal "Carpathia" was built on the foundations of Internet Spatial Data Server (ISDS), which provides a set of Web GIS tools developed by ISPiK S.A., using the WebEdit content management system. The metadata system is based on Terra Catalogue of ConTerra GmbH. Thanks to the compliance to ISO and OGC standards with respect to metadata, the geoportal "Carpathia " will become one of the nodes of the international network of spatial metadata catalogues, fulfilling INSPIRE and GSDI requirements. The paper gives a short description of the sources of map data that form the geoportal content and draws attention to the fact that most of the data comes from non-geodetic sources, with the exception of the European Union territorial units borders database (NUTS). The paper also discusses lessons learned throughout the project duration of more than two years. The positive experiences include the development of cooperation between partners from seven countries in the course of the project. The negative experiences include financial settlements, mainly financial statements certifications and long payment delays.
