EN In 3D FEM's of electric machines, the scalar potential is approximated by using node finite elements and vector magnetic potential by edge finite elements. Such 3D FEM's are able to include rotor cage bar skew and cross-currents in magnetic circuits. The electric machines can be modelled in its entirety, including housing, shaft and bearing areas, which makes it possible to study other phenomena. It is however necessary to include the saturation of magnetic circuit. The non-linearity in the magnetic circuits of laminated stacks, as it is referred to further in this paper, is included based on the tangential to the iron magnetisation characteristics. This method was implemented in 3D models, and proved to be competitive to Newton-Raphson analytical method. Its numerical properties were tested on 3D FE model of the three-column multi-winding autotransformer, which is used in 18-pulse diode rectifiers, as well as on 3D model of induction machine.
