The focus of this paper lies on the practical aspects of multimedia communications in cellular networks. First, the SIP standards will be positioned within the ISO-OSI model and discussed briefly. A detailed description of protocol procedures in multimedia communication, measured in a real IP environment, will then be presented. The protocol analyses that were conducted in the course of the investigation will be documented in diagrams and subsequently evaluated. A further part of the paper will be devoted to the new service PoC (Push-to- Talk over Cellular). This service is one of the first VoIP applications in cellular networks. The paper conc1udes with a summary.
