W artykule zwrócono uwagę na znaczenie logistyki zwrotnej dla prawidłowo funkcjonującego łańcucha dostaw. Podkreślono najważniejsze cechy przepływów odwrotnych w ramach koncepcji logistyki zwrotnej. Wskazano i omówiono filary teorii zrównoważonego rozwoju precyzujące istotę koncepcji logistyki zwrotnej. Przedstawiono ogólne tendencje w rozwoju logistyki zwrotnej zwracając uwagę na kontekst, w jakim definiowano koncepcję. Poruszono również kwestię stosowanej terminologii w odniesieniu do pojęcia logistyka zwrotna oraz problem nieścisłości występujący w tym obszarze. W dalszej części rozważań scharakteryzowano główne determinanty rozwoju logistyki zwrotnej. Wskazano cztery zasadnicze punkty widzenia na logistykę zwrotną - przyczyny zwrotów, sposób funkcjonowania logistyki zwrotnej, przedmiot przepływów zwrotnych oraz podmioty logistyki zwrotnej i sformułowano hipotezę wyjaśniającą wzajemne relacje występujące między tymi czynnikami.

The article points out that reverse logistics is important for the correct functioning of a supply chain and underscores the major characteristics of return flows within this concept. It indicates and discusses the pillars of sustainable development theory, as well as presenting in detail the nature of the concept of reverse logistics. General trends in the development of reverse logistics are characterised with respect to the context in which the concept was formulated. Moreover, the article raises the issue of terminology operated in the field of reverse logistics and the problem of inaccuracies occurring therein. Then the main factors determining the development of reverse logistics are discussed. Four major perspectives on reverse logistics are distinguished - the causes of returns, the functioning of reverse logistics, the object of return flows and the agents in reverse logistics; a hypothesis explaining mutual relations between the presented factors is formulated.
