Contamination of coastal water samples collected for organic carbon analysis by a surface microlayer

Two types of water samplers (with and without contact with the surface microlayer while taking the sample) were compared with regard to sampling sea water for dissolved organic carbon (DOC) analyses. The t-test of the DOC data proved statistically significant differences between the samples collected with different samplers. The most pronounced differences were observed in samples collected during calm weather. The higher values were measured in samples taken with the sampler immersed in open state which suggest contamination with DOC accumulated in the surface microlayer. The application of Close-Open-Close type sampler allowed reducing contamination and improved precision of DOC determination in coastal water.
